The UK is bracing for its first snowfall of late 2024, as a cold front from the Arctic brings freezing conditions and plunging temperatures.
The Met Office has warned that an “Arctic blast” will push temperatures well below zero in some areas, marking a dramatic shift after a mild and damp start to autumn.
Forecasters predict an “unseasonably cold” spell, with Arctic winds sweeping across the country. After weeks of temperatures hovering around 20°C, the coming days will feel like a sharp shock, with temperatures set to drop 4 to 6°C below average for this time of year.
The Met Office said: “Many of us will see temperatures in the mid-teens – around 13 to 14°C – whereas normally at this time of year, it would be at least 16 to 18°C, if not closer to 19 to 20°C in the far South East, places like London.”
Friday morning is expected to be the coldest of the week, with much of the UK experiencing temperatures in the low to mid-teens. Despite the frosty start, Friday will remain largely dry, until rain hits the North West later in the evening.

Fortunately, the cold snap will be brief. By the weekend, warmer air from the Atlantic is forecast to push back against the Arctic winds, bringing temperatures back to seasonal norms.
The Met Office added: “Milder air from the Atlantic is expected to push back across the country later on Friday and more especially into the weekend, cutting off the cold air from the north and seeing a return to temperatures nearer average for the time of year.”
Derby Weather today and for the rest of the weekend
The Met Office has forecast a fine and dry day for Derby on Friday, with pleasant spells of sunshine throughout.
After a chilly start, any early morning mist patches will clear, leading to a bright and sunny morning.
Light winds will persist throughout the day, although some cloud cover is expected in the afternoon. Despite this, the day will remain dry, and temperatures will reach a maximum of 16°C.
Tonight, clear skies will continue, making way for a cold night. Light winds and falling temperatures could bring areas of mist and shallow fog patches around dawn. The temperature is expected to drop to a minimum of 5°C.
Looking ahead to Saturday, the forecast remains positive with more fine and dry weather in store. Periods of sunshine will persist, although the sun may become increasingly hazy later in the day. Temperatures will be warmer than on Friday, reaching a pleasant maximum of 19°C.
