Police have issued an urgent warning after scammers targeted Derby residents in different areas with an elaborate scheme.
The scammers have targeted residents in Chaddesden, Oakwood and Spondon today (Sunday, September 1), as well as other areas in Derby. According to police, the darring scammers pretend to be police officers, even using names of real police stationed in Derby.
The scammers are said to be telling people that their bank cards have been used to withdraw cash from Asda in Spondon. They then trick people into surrendering their bank details and PIN.
A spokesperson for Derbyshire City Centre Police SNT said: “We’re seeing a spike in calls where fraudsters pretends to be a police officer to obtain people’s bank details over the phone.
“They have even used the names of some of our officers in the calls to appear more legitimate. They then try to trick people into giving away details such as passwords, security codes or their PIN.”
