Two men launched a violent attack on a pub patron in Chesterfield, leaving him with life-threatening injuries.

The incident took place on April 13, 2023, at the Woodside pub on Ashgate Road, where a dispute between the victim and the attackers quickly escalated.

Jordan Basnett, 31, and David Davies, 41, were involved in the brutal assault, which began in the beer garden.

The argument led to Basnett headbutting the victim before Davies stabbed him multiple times with a Stanley knife.

The victim, a man in his 30s, was left with stab wounds to his abdomen, and upper back, and a slash across his face.

The victim was rushed to Northern General Hospital in a critical condition, requiring emergency surgery and a blood transfusion. He has since been left with life-changing scars.

After the attack, Basnett and Davies received help from two others, Alan Turner and Adrian Cherry. Turner, 52, hid the Stanley knife in his car, while Cherry, 54, drove the pair away from the scene after they flagged him down.

A thorough investigation ensued, with Basnett being arrested on April 20, 2023. Davies was arrested on June 6, 2023, and found carrying a Stanley knife.

The men faced charges, and on December 2, 2024, they appeared in Derby Crown Court for sentencing. Basnett admitted to wounding with intent and was jailed for five years. Davies pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and possession of a knife in a public place, receiving a sentence of five years and 10 months.

Turner and Cherry, who assisted the attackers, were sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years. Turner was also ordered to serve a three-month curfew, and Cherry was sentenced to 150 hours of unpaid work.

Detective Constable Sullivan, speaking after the trial, said: “The victim could have easily died from the injuries inflicted by Basnett and Davies. Their actions showed no regard for the victim’s life, and they have shown no remorse. I want to thank the staff at the Woodside pub for their cooperation during this investigation, ensuring that these individuals will no longer cause harm in our communities.”

Alan Turner (52):

Turner was charged with assisting an offender after he hid the Stanley knife used in the attack in his car. He admitted to the charge and was sentenced to six months, suspended for two years. He was also ordered to serve a three-month curfew.

Adrian Cherry (54):

Cherry was charged with assisting an offender after driving Basnett and Davies away from the scene of the attack. He admitted to the charge and was sentenced to six months, suspended for two years. He was also ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work.

Each man’s sentence was based on the extent of their involvement in the attack and subsequent actions. Basnett and Davies received custodial sentences for their direct roles in the stabbing, while Turner and Cherry received suspended sentences for assisting the offenders.
