An elderly woman in Allestree was targeted in a distraction burglary after two men tricked their way into her home with a fake promotion offering free smoke alarms.

The men visited the woman’s address between June and July, claiming she had been “selected” to receive the alarms. Once inside her home, one of the men engaged the victim in conversation, while the other stole a valuable gold Omega watch.

Police are now investigating the incident and have urged anyone with information, or who may have received a similar visit, to come forward. A spokesperson for the force said: “Officers investigating a distraction burglary in Allestree are appealing for witnesses and information.

“Two men attended the address of an elderly woman and told her she had been selected to receive some free smoke alarms. While inside the property one of them kept the homeowner talking while the other has stolen a gold Omega watch.
“The incident occurred sometime between June and July. We are keen to hear from anyone with any information, as well as anyone who received a similar visit.
