Residents in Derby are voicing their frustration as litter piles up around bins, contributing to an unsightly mess that many say is turning the city into a “dump.”

A recent photo on Booth Street in Alvaston shows a black litter bin surrounded by discarded items, including clothes, cardboard, and plastic bags, all strewn carelessly on the ground just inches from the bin.

“It’s shocking and frustrating to see the state of our surroundings. Do people truly not value or respect their country, city, or home?” one resident lamented.

“Our children do not deserve to live in such squalor, surrounded by trash. Please start with yourself and teach your children to respect the place they live.”

This scene has become all too common in Derby, with residents noting that littering next to bins rather than in them has become a troubling norm. In a video recorded by Derby Now reporters, chip packets and other trash can be seen discarded on the pavement just seven meters from a public bin.

Other residents shared similar concerns. “It’s disheartening to see people treat our city this way,” one local said. Another resident added, “It only takes a few seconds to put trash in the bin. Why go out of your way to litter instead?”
